“it’s basically an honor system.” https://t.co/h3Fqw1iUhq But this isn't like filling out a phony form. In this case the bureaucracy seems to be sluicing ineligible voters toward fraud unless they intervene to stop it. https://t.co/DPSPsaGV7W

If you can't deport people who lose their asylum hearings (because they don't qualify for asylum), why bother having the hearings? Everybody gets to stay anyway. Why argue about whether participants in "Alternatives to Detention" show up at hearings? They get to stay either way.

Which is another reason he may have *less* leverage now than if he'd just gone ahead and enforced the law without saying anything. Dems now think any constructive concessions will be portrayed as ransom payments, no? https://t.co/HHfllNaArI

He might have SOME leverage if the MSM was on his side–eg 'Trump accedes to Pelosi request to stop normal law enforcement operation. Now will Dems deliver a solution?' But of course MSM will portray it as 'Trump takes hostage. Will Dems bow to pressure?' https://t.co/0IMjyKmmSn https://t.co/EqjSN8I1HM

In any case, Dems won't take such a deal. They want a full legal amnesty for another, non-asylum population (Dreamers + parents + as many other illegal immigrants as possible). They're happy with the 100's of 1000's of ersatz asylum seekers getting in. Don't see Trump's leverage. https://t.co/6bNZOJcWTh

It's a mini-"comprehensive" trade: Amnesty (de facto) for enforcement, but restricted only to asylum cases. Will Dems just pocket the amnesty & then undermine the loophole-closing? In this case the amnesty could maybe be reversed, and might be hard to undermine a statutory change https://t.co/vWUWGMTgfZ

Last two sentences make a good point. Trump seems to be going for an implicit deal: 'OK, Dems. All the bogus asylum seekers that have already gotten in get to stay (even though they lost in court) if you'll only help stop the bogus asylum seekers that might come in the future." https://t.co/EGWFFP8tqi

Of course Dems (& Lindsey Graham) will be ready with a nice big amnesty as the price of loophole-closing. Will Trump cave? If there's going to be a Big Jared Sellout this would be an obvious occasion. But it wouldn't square with Trump's alleged turnout-based reelection strategy https://t.co/G1SC6to93D

Makes it look more like Trump is scared of the media coverage of deportations–perfectly legal deportations after would-be asylum claimants have lost their cases. Trump is telegraphing weakness here and pretending he's telegraphing strength, no? https://t.co/UOIAuhZdxX

I sense a pattern! The problem is Democrats aren't scared of a few hundred deportations the way Mexico was scared of tariffs (or, arguably, Iran might be scared of US military retaliation). https://t.co/G1SC6to93D
